Start Campus Plans $9.35 Billion Data Center Hub in Portugal

08-Apr-2025

Start Campus, supported by Davidson Kempner and Pioneer Point Partners, has unveiled a monumental €8.5 billion (approximately $9.35 billion) investment plan to establish a massive data center hub in Sines, Portugal by 2030. This initiative is part of a strategic move to position Portugal as a prominent digital infrastructure hotspot in Europe.

The project is expected to create one of the largest data center ecosystems in Southern Europe, leveraging Sines' unique geographical advantages — including access to transatlantic fiber optic cables and renewable energy sources. With rising demand for cloud computing, AI training workloads, and digital transformation across industries, the hub aims to attract hyperscalers and global technology providers seeking high-performance, sustainable infrastructure.

According to the announcement, the hub will also play a key role in boosting the local economy by creating jobs and increasing Portugal’s competitiveness in the global data economy. Start Campus emphasized its long-term vision of blending cutting-edge infrastructure with green energy solutions to drive Europe's digital future.

This major investment marks a significant step in Europe's broader ambition to expand its technological sovereignty, with Portugal poised to become a digital gateway between continents.
