OpenAI releases GPT Image 1.5 with major speed and text-rendering upgrades
17-Dec-2025
OpenAI has released GPT Image 1.5, a significant update to ChatGPT’s image-generation system, positioning it as a direct response to recent advances from Google in creative AI.
The new model delivers up to four times faster image generation while dramatically improving one of the biggest weak points of earlier systems: text rendering. GPT Image 1.5 is designed to handle long text blocks, infographics, and varied font sizes with far greater reliability than its predecessor, GPT-image-1.
Beyond speed, OpenAI says the model maintains stronger consistency across edits, preserving faces, lighting, and composition when users refine or modify images — a long-standing challenge in generative image workflows.
On public benchmarks, GPT Image 1.5 has moved to first place on both Artificial Analysis and LM Arena leaderboards for text-to-image generation and image editing, overtaking competing models.
Alongside the model release, OpenAI also introduced a dedicated creative panel within ChatGPT, complementing the standard chat-based workflow with quick-start templates and curated style options aimed at designers, marketers, and creators.
While GPT-image-1 previously saw viral adoption, the pace of innovation in generative media has been relentless. GPT Image 1.5 signals OpenAI’s intent to stay competitive at the frontier as creative AI tools rapidly converge in quality, speed, and usability.
