Bryan Johnson says immortality by 2039 is now a realistic goal

16-Dec-2025

Longevity entrepreneur and Blueprint founder Bryan Johnson has publicly declared an ambitious goal: achieving functional human immortality by 2039 — defined as one year of time passing without an increase in biological age. Johnson argues that this moment in history is unprecedented. For the first time, advances in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and high-resolution biomarker measurement have created a realistic pathway to slow, halt, or even reverse biological aging. He describes aging not as an unsolved physics problem, but as a biological engineering challenge that nature itself has already solved. Johnson points to examples such as the freshwater hydra, the so-called “immortal jellyfish” (Turritopsis dohrnii), and lobsters, which maintain cellular integrity through mechanisms like continuous regeneration and active telomerase expression. His thesis is that these biological “software patterns” can eventually be ported into humans. Central to the 2039 timeline is AI’s evolving role. Johnson says AI is rapidly transitioning from assistant to scientist — accelerating discovery, drug development, and closed-loop experimentation. His own work includes building thousands of personalized organ clones in laboratory dishes to safely test therapies before human application. Over six years, Johnson claims to have reduced many of his biological markers to elite teenage levels, including cardiovascular performance, strength, and hormonal health, though some aging effects — such as hearing loss and brain anatomy — remain unsolved. Beyond personal longevity, Johnson frames the initiative as a cultural intervention. He argues humanity currently operates with a self-destructive mindset — in diet, environment, and technology — and that aiming for immortality redirects civilization toward preservation, responsibility, and long-term thinking. While Johnson acknowledges the risks, including cancer and unforeseen side effects, he says the deeper goal is hope: aligning humanity around life-affirming ambitions at a time when AI-driven superintelligence is rapidly emerging. Through his Blueprint project, Johnson says he will continue sharing protocols, data, and methodologies openly, inviting others to participate at a fraction of the current cost. Whether or not immortality is achieved by 2039, the declaration marks a significant shift in how technology leaders are framing the future of human existence — not as something to optimize temporarily, but to actively preserve.
