The autonomous navigation market is projected to exceed $11 billion by 2028, with companies like Orca AI pushing innovation in the space.
Orca AI recently closed a $72.5 million Series B funding round led by Brighton Park Capital, with participation from Ankona Capital and Hyperlink Ventures. The London-based startup has now raised over $111 million in total funding, including a $23 million round last year.
The fresh capital is driven by rising demand in the defense sector. Founded in 2018, Orca AI combines AI decision-making and a marine dataset of 80 million nautical miles to enhance collision avoidance and optimize maritime navigation.
While Orca AI remains focused on commercial shipping, defense applications are growing. The firm has already signed its first defense contract and deployed on a navy ship.
Starlink integration further boosts Orca AI’s capabilities, enabling real-time data transfer from ship sensors for route mapping and traffic monitoring. In 2024, the system reportedly reduced close-encounter events by 54%, saving up to $100,000 per vessel annually.
