Sundar Pichai Hails OpenAI Deal as a Strategic Win for Google Cloud

25-Jul-2025

According to TechCrunch, during Google’s Q2 2025 earnings call on July 23, CEO Sundar Pichai made clear his enthusiasm for Google Cloud's newly announced partnership with OpenAI—despite the fact that OpenAI is a direct challenger to Google in the AI space. "With respect to OpenAI, look, we are very excited to be partnering with them on Google Cloud," Pichai said, noting Google Cloud is an open platform with a long history of serving AI labs and startups. This collaboration comes at a pivotal moment: Google's cloud revenue surged to approximately $13.6 billion in Q2 2025, up from $10.3 billion a year earlier. That nearly 32% growth was partly driven by AI firms—including OpenAI—adopting Google’s infrastructure. Google has attracted multiple AI labs, including Anthropic and others, thanks to its access to both Nvidia GPUs and proprietary TPUs. In parallel, Alphabet announced it will increase its 2025 capital expenditure guidance by $10 billion—from $75 billion to $85 billion—to meet rising demand for cloud and AI infrastructure. Though this surprised some investors, executives emphasized the investment is necessary to maintain competitive edge in AI capabilities and infrastructure capacity. Pichai’s remarks reveal a layered strategy: while OpenAI-based products like ChatGPT pose a competitive threat to Google Search, partnering with OpenAI commercially positions Google Cloud as a foundational AI infrastructure player across the industry. It’s a bet on infrastructure supremacy over solely owning AI applications. The deal underscores Google Cloud’s evolution: from trailing AWS and Azure in market share to becoming a preferred provider for leading AI organizations. It highlights how Google is redefining its competitive position—not just by building its own generative AI products (e.g. Gemini, 450 million monthly active users; AI Overviews, 2 billion monthly users)—but by powering others’ AI ambitions as well.
