19-Oct-2025

The Government of India’s Press Information Bureau published a backgrounder titled “Transforming India with AI”, detailing progress on the nationwide AI program. The note cites an outlay of ₹10,371.92 crore over five years for the IndiaAI Mission and reports that India has already onboarded 38,000 GPUs to widen affordable access to compute for developers, startups, and institutions. It frames AI as a cross-sector growth lever—from healthcare and agriculture to education and digital governance—and underscores a focus on open, affordable, and accessible innovation.

The backgrounder positions India among global leaders on AI skills and policy, highlighting affordable compute (GPUs at subsidized hourly rates), expanded datasets, and safety research (bias mitigation, privacy-preserving ML, explainability, and auditing). The thrust is to translate research into inclusive services while building sovereign capabilities in models and infrastructure.
