Panthalassa has raised $140 million in a Series B round to develop ocean-based AI compute infrastructure. As per the official announcement, the company is building autonomous floating platforms that generate power from ocean waves to run AI workloads, aiming to create a new category of offshore data centers.
As demand for AI compute accelerates, traditional data center models are running into limits around energy, land, and environmental impact. Panthalassa’s approach suggests a new direction: moving compute into less constrained environments like the ocean. While still early, offshore AI infrastructure could become part of a broader strategy to scale compute capacity without relying solely on terrestrial expansion.
