Microsoft has officially introduced Copilot Mode in its Edge browser, marking a significant step in embedding AI directly into everyday browsing. The new feature enables Edge to become an intelligent assistant that can search across open tabs, analyze context, handle user tasks, and even proactively suggest or take actions. Copilot Mode functions from the new tab page, integrating advanced capabilities like voice interaction and multi-tab analysis into the browsing experience. For now, the feature is available for free on both Windows and Mac systems, but requires users to opt in. Microsoft hinted that this might transition to a paid subscription model in the future. Perhaps more importantly, Microsoft confirmed that Copilot Mode will, with user permission, be able to access browser history and credentials to complete tasks such as booking appointments or running errands. This points toward deeper agentic behavior and raises the bar for future AI assistants in browsers. Why does this matter?
