Mattel and OpenAI Partner to Create AI-Powered Toys
13-Jun-2025
Barbie-maker Mattel and OpenAI have formed a strategic partnership to integrate generative AI into the toy-making process and explore new opportunities in IP repackaging. This collaboration marks OpenAI’s first foray into the toy industry, though it aligns with its broader strategy of embedding its technology across various sectors. According to Mattel, the iconic toymaker is developing AI-powered products to enhance fan experiences through safe, secure, and privacy-conscious technologies.
Mattel, which enjoyed huge success with the 2023 “Barbie” movie, is currently working on content based on classic toy lines like Hot Wheels, UNO, and Masters of the Universe. The company also has a presence in animated and live-action TV and is expanding into digital gaming. The partnership with OpenAI could bring cutting-edge conversational and generative AI tools into this ecosystem.
Although details of the AI product have not yet been disclosed, the companies stated that the first AI-enhanced offering will debut later in 2025. This product aims to improve fan engagement responsibly and thoughtfully. Josh Silverman, chief franchise officer at Mattel, hinted that the AI functionality could span physical products and digital content, combining play with technological innovation.
This announcement signals OpenAI’s growing interest in consumer-facing markets beyond its typical enterprise and news publisher partnerships. As the collaboration progresses, more details are expected on how OpenAI’s technology will influence toy design, storytelling, and user interaction in Mattel’s upcoming releases.
