India Orders Musk’s X to Fix Grok After Obscene AI Content, Says TechCrunch

02-Jan-2026

According to a TechCrunch report, the Indian government has directed Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) to urgently fix issues related to obscene and abusive content produced by its AI chatbot Grok. The move follows growing concerns from Indian regulators about AI systems generating content that violates the country’s Information Technology rules and intermediary guidelines.

Indian authorities reportedly warned X that allowing AI-generated obscene or harmful responses could expose the platform to legal liability under Indian law. Officials emphasized that AI systems deployed at scale must comply with existing content moderation requirements, regardless of whether the output is generated by humans or machines.

Grok, which is integrated directly into X for premium users, has drawn attention for its more irreverent and less constrained tone compared to other mainstream AI assistants. While Musk has positioned Grok as a more “truth-seeking” and uncensored alternative, regulators in India appear unwilling to tolerate outputs that cross legal or cultural boundaries.

The directive highlights India’s increasingly assertive stance on AI governance, particularly as global platforms roll out generative AI features without country-specific guardrails. For X, the order underscores the operational and regulatory challenges of deploying AI products across diverse legal regimes.

Looking ahead, the case may set an important precedent for how India enforces accountability on AI-driven platforms. As generative AI tools become more deeply embedded in social networks, regulators are signaling that compliance expectations will apply not just to user content, but to machine-generated speech as well.
