Google Open-Sources Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) Repository for Agent-Driven Purchases

11-Jan-2026

Google has published the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) on GitHub, providing code samples and demos aimed at enabling secure and interoperable payments initiated by AI agents.

The repository includes sample scenarios (Python and Android) demonstrating agent-driven purchase flows, and highlights that the demos use Google’s Agent Development Kit (ADK) and Gemini 2.5 Flash—while noting that AP2 itself is tool-agnostic and can work with other frameworks.

The goal of AP2 is to make agent commerce safer and more traceable by standardizing how agents request, authorize, and execute purchases across vendors and payment systems.

Why it matters: If AI agents are going to shop on behalf of users, payments need strong authorization, auditability, and interoperability. An open AP2 repo lowers the barrier for developers and partners to adopt a common standard and build trusted agentic commerce workflows.
