Google Gemini Adds Automatic Email Summary Cards to Gmail

31-May-2025

Google has introduced a major update to its Gemini AI assistant by integrating automatic email summary cards directly into Gmail. This new feature places summary cards at the top of long emails, offering users a quick overview of the email content without needing to click a button. Previously, users had to initiate summaries manually, but now Gemini will automatically generate them when needed. When Gemini was first added to the Gmail side panel, it came with multiple tools to enhance productivity—summarizing long threads, suggesting email drafts, and proposing responses. Now, by taking a step further, Google enables Gemini to proactively generate these summaries. Whether users want this functionality or not, Gemini will provide it. The change is part of a broader trend in AI integrations, even though AI-generated summaries have not always been accurate or reliable. For instance, Apple's AI summary feature for app notifications reportedly generated inaccurate headlines, prompting the BBC to highlight its limitations. Apple eventually paused that rollout due to quality concerns. Similarly, Google's own AI Overviews in Search have made frequent mistakes, often presenting poor-quality or factually wrong information. Despite these issues, Google continues to bet big on AI's utility in everyday software. With email summary cards, Gemini lists key points of long emails and updates them as replies arrive, saving users the need to scroll through lengthy threads.
