Elon Musk has outlined a new initiative called Terafab, a proposed large-scale AI chip manufacturing facility that would span Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI.
In a post shared on X, Musk described Terafab as an ambitious effort to scale AI compute production significantly, calling it one of the most extensive chip manufacturing projects envisioned to date.
Musk also highlighted the possibility of deploying AI compute in space using solar-powered satellites launched via SpaceX’s Starship, arguing that space-based infrastructure could eventually reduce the cost and constraints of Earth-based data centers.
The Terafab concept fits into Musk’s broader vision of scaling AI infrastructure and supporting long-term goals around automation, robotics, and potentially space-based computing ecosystems.
The announcement reflects how AI infrastructure is becoming a central competitive battleground, with companies exploring increasingly large-scale and unconventional approaches to meet growing compute demand.
While details remain limited and the project is still at a conceptual stage, Terafab highlights the scale of ambition emerging in the race to build the next generation of AI hardware and infrastructure.
