DeepMind reflects on 10 years of AlphaGo and its impact on AI research

15-Mar-2026

The Story

Google DeepMind has released a retrospective reflecting on the tenth anniversary of AlphaGo, the artificial intelligence system that became widely known for defeating top professional Go players and demonstrating the power of deep reinforcement learning.

According to the official blog post from Google DeepMind, the AlphaGo project marked a major turning point in AI research by combining deep neural networks with reinforcement learning to master one of the most complex board games ever created.

The AlphaGo breakthrough

What followed after AlphaGo

The AlphaGo breakthrough led to a series of increasingly advanced systems including AlphaGo Zero and AlphaZero. These systems learned purely through self-play without human data, demonstrating a powerful general approach to problem solving.

DeepMind later applied similar techniques to other domains, including protein structure prediction through AlphaFold, scientific discovery, and optimization problems.

Why it matters

The AlphaGo milestone is widely considered one of the defining moments of modern AI research. It helped demonstrate that reinforcement learning combined with large-scale computation could produce systems capable of mastering complex strategic environments.

Ten years later, many of the techniques pioneered during the AlphaGo project continue to influence the development of today’s advanced AI models and autonomous learning systems.
