Anthropic Cuts Windsurf’s Access to Claude Models Amid OpenAI Acquisition Rumors
08-Jun-2025
Windsurf, the rising star in AI-powered vibe coding, has found itself in a challenging position after Anthropic significantly reduced its access to Claude 3.7 Sonnet and 3.5 Sonnet AI models. The startup, reportedly being acquired by OpenAI, is now scrambling to find alternate third-party compute providers to support its users. CEO Varun Mohan expressed disappointment on social media, stating that Anthropic gave less than five days' notice for the transition and that Windsurf was willing to pay full capacity costs.
This development comes on the heels of Anthropic’s recent launch of Claude 4 and its growing investment in proprietary AI coding tools like Claude Code. At the same time, OpenAI has allegedly closed a deal to acquire Windsurf, making the situation even more complex. Windsurf noted that it still lacks access to Claude 4, unlike competitors like Cursor, Devin, and GitHub Copilot, which had it at launch.
Anthropic’s abrupt move may be driven by a need to prioritize sustainable partnerships as it focuses on maximizing the impact of Claude 4. Windsurf has implemented expensive workarounds but warns that users may face availability issues in the short term.
In a blog post, Windsurf acknowledged its limited remaining access capacity, confirming that this change could affect users in the immediate future. Despite these setbacks, the startup remains committed to supporting its community by rapidly scaling alternative compute options.
