Nvidia is reportedly preparing to release a new, more affordable version of its flagship Blackwell AI GPU for the Chinese market. This move comes in response to escalating U.S.-China trade tensions and ongoing restrictions on high-performance chip exports.
According to Reuters, the scaled-down Blackwell chip will enter mass production in June and serve as a successor to the H20 GPU, which was also tailored for China. Built on Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D architecture, the new model will feature approximately 1.7TB/s of GDDR7 memory—less than half the bandwidth of the H20’s 4TB/s.
The new GPU is expected to be priced between $6.5K and $8K, making it significantly cheaper than the $10–12K H20. Despite limited performance, the lower price point may help Nvidia hold onto market share in China amid stiff competition from domestic players like Huawei.
Nvidia has yet to formally confirm the product, stating the design is still under U.S. export review and the chip remains 'foreclosed' from the Chinese market until regulatory approval is secured.
This strategy reveals Nvidia’s attempt to remain commercially relevant in China while navigating a fine line between performance delivery and regulatory compliance. It also illustrates the growing complexity of global AI hardware distribution as geopolitical barriers rise.
