Google has revealed its plans to integrate Gemini, the company’s powerful generative AI, into all vehicles running Android Auto in the coming months. The announcement came during the Android Show held ahead of Google’s 2025 I/O developer conference. Gemini’s inclusion is expected to mark a major leap in the in-vehicle AI experience, bringing capabilities that go far beyond today’s Google Assistant.
According to Google, Gemini will begin appearing first in Android Auto and later this year in vehicles that run on Google’s built-in operating system. By embedding Gemini, Google aims to create a smarter, more helpful, and more human-like in-car assistant. The system will allow users to send messages, play music, manage tasks, and more using natural language, all without needing to rely on rigid commands. Gemini’s powerful LLMs (large language models) enable context-aware responses and personalized interactions.
During a media briefing, Patrick Brady, VP of Android for Cars, noted that this could become one of the largest transformations in the automotive software space in recent years. Gemini in Android Auto will initially power an advanced voice assistant experience that works with any connected phone, regardless of ownership. This makes it easier for multiple users to engage with the system without reconfiguring preferences. Gemini’s assistant will intelligently understand user context and execute commands with higher fluidity than traditional voice AI systems.
Another core feature is memory. Gemini can recall user preferences, such as whether a contact prefers text messages in a certain language, and automatically manage that translation. It can also handle detailed tasks, like searching for restaurants with specific dietary needs—using Google Maps data, user reviews, and other context signals to deliver hyper-relevant recommendations (e.g., 'taco places with vegan options near me').
The upgrade is designed to work seamlessly across all car models that support Android Auto, without needing any new hardware. As part of Google’s broader Gemini rollout across Workspace, Search, and now mobility, this move underscores the company’s bet on AI-driven ambient computing. Gemini in cars will help make driving more productive, safe, and enjoyable, all while showcasing the natural interaction capabilities of Google’s next-generation AI systems. With this expansion, Google is clearly positioning Gemini not just as a backend model, but as a visible, everyday assistant integrated into modern life—including the moments you spend behind the wheel.
